UMass Dartmouth Textile Design/Fiber Arts facilities
Studios for the Textile Design and Fiber Arts program are located on the second floor of the Star Store - New Bedford Campus. The spacious studios are newly equipped for all textile design/fiber art pursuits. Our studios provide natural light through expansive windows, with adjustable light areas for critique and presentations. Fibers facilities and labs exceed current health and safety standards.
Dyeing, printing and constructed textile courses are taught in the textile surface design print room - equipped with six padded screen print tables, design preparations tables, industrial and domestic sewing machines. Support studios for dyeing and printing include a large dye lab with stainless steel equipment, hooded dye mixing station, screen washout sink, professional steam cabinet and indigo dye area; a silk screen preparation space and dark room; and well-ventilated batik room. An additional general classroom space is used for textile design classes, and a non-loom construction course - which includes spinning, basketry, feltmaking and knitting. The main weaving studio is equipped with 20 floor looms, a computerized dobby loom, and expansive yarn storage room. A fibers library houses more than 175 textile reference books and periodicals for student use, and the in-house historic image archive which has also been digitized to the VRC collection.
There is a separate graduate studios, a special installation gallery and ample critique spaces for the presentation and review of graduate student work. Graduate studios can be equipped with multi-harness looms, print tables, design tables and storage cabinets to support the individual technical requirements of each student.
The Textile Design Media Lab is outfitted 12 large screen iMac Apple computers, an array of general design software, plus printers and scanners, Pointcarre proprietary industry software for advanced textile design, and WeaveMaker for basic weaving projects. The media lab is staffed by a full-time computer design technician.
