POEMS
When he closed his eyes in the hope of catching
an afternoon's rest
in the armchair
he began thinking about how the expression
to look death in the eye was a strange expression
it is actually the one thing one cannot look in the eye
even with closed eyes
even the blind painter can create works of art
even if he can't trust the label-reading assistant
for colors can always be interchanged as long as one knows what it is
all about
whether it is red or green doesn't make that big a difference
anyway there are too few colors with labels
to satisfy images seen behind closed eyes

In my sleep I tossed back and forth
the door rattled in its loose lock
ancecdotes couldn't be shaken off
got up to try and stop the draft
and saw all the leaves of the olive trees moving in unison
but for me everything was just an obstacle
my dream was to sleep the painter's sleep
