Visual Resource Center INSTRUCTIONAL & VISUAL LITERACY SUPPORT

With more than twenty-five years of experience with Instructional Development and Visual Literacy Education, the Visual Resource Center staff has worked closely with faculty to design customized instructional solutions using digital images and media to support classroom and online curriculum goals.

CURRICULUM RESOURCES

VISUAL LITERACY

According to The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL): “Visual Literacy is essential for 21st century learners. Across the higher education curriculum, students are being asked to use and produce images and visual media in their academic work, and they must be prepared to do so.”

ACRL Visual Literacy Standards

The VRC provides support to students and faculty to implement the ACRL’s Visual Literacy Standards for Higher Education. Images often function as information, but they are also aesthetic and creative objects that require additional levels of interpretation and analysis.  Visual Literacy outcomes challenge students to develop a combination of abilities related to visual communication, including: observation, critical analysis, and interpretation. Determining authenticity also includes skills in research and determination of intent, accuracy, and validity within a broader cultural context, and the use and creation of digital media as a means of visual communication.
