Andrew Nixon’s recent paintings explore stillness, form and light. He is concerned with the viewer’s experience of time, and how it varies depending on whether the object is a painting or a photograph. Among his influences are ancient Egyptian sculpture and the paintings of Danish Modernist Wilhelm Hammershøi.

Nixon’s paintings have been widely exhibited in numerous one-person and group shows in the United States and Europe. A mid-career retrospective kicked off the Centennial celebration of the Newport Art Museum in Newport RI. His work is in the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, the Newport Art Museum, the Stewartry Museum in Scotland, and several corporate collections.

A native of Rhode Island, Nixon has received international recognition. Art UK, a registry of all works in public collections in the United Kingdom, has catalogued his work, and artsy.net listed his show, The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, at Cade Tompkins Projects in Providence, RI, as its top museum and gallery show. Recently his painting Pandora Jumping a Hurdle was featured in an issue of the  Chinese magazine Art World.

Andrew Nixon was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant for painting in 2012-13.
