Because computers are a such a valuable tool in both the design and presentation of any project, civil engineers are introduced to computing in their freshman year. UMass Dartmouth has more than 200 computer workstations available to students. Basic training on all computers is available at the university free of charge to students.

In addition to the computer clusters available to all students at UMass Dartmouth, civil engineering students have access to powerful computers with specialized software in the civil engineering laboratory. This lab includes both software and hardware typically used in the practicing civil engineer's office today for computer-aided design.

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department maintains Geotechnical, Environmental, Fluid Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials, and Transportation Laboratories for research and educational purposes. The ATMC facility in Fall River, MA, currently has a transportation materials laboratory assigned to a faculty member in the department.

Students can also work as interns in places such as the Massachusetts Military Reservation, treatment plants, or at consulting firms.
