The BS in civil and environmental engineering includes 127 total credits.
The academic preparation for such a varied profession requires considerable breadth as well as depth. Students first receive a thorough grounding in mathematics, the basic sciences, and the engineering sciences; secondly, a broad background in the basic civil engineering specialties; and, finally, depth of understanding in the specialty of the student's choice by means of a sequence of electives in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering.
Students will learn new technologies and new methods for design, construction, and maintenance. State-of-the-art computer applications are incorporated into the entire curriculum.
In addition to the courses required for a major in civil and environmental engineering, students meet the college's requirements for a well-rounded liberal arts education. They take elected and required courses in subjects such as English, literature, the humanities (history, philosophy, art, music, and foreign language), and the social sciences (economics, political science, psychology and sociology).
A typical freshman takes courses in Principles of Modern Chemistry, Analytical Geometry and Calculus, Classical Physics, Civil Engineering Design Graphics, Principles of Computer Programming, and Critical Writing and Reading.
Each student's program culminates in a major design experience. Students have designed and constructed various structures on campus and in the community, including an astronomical observatory, a footbridge, baseball dugouts, a beach facilities building, and an addition to a town library.
