Security is a very broad issue, ranging from operating system security, to communication and network, cryptography, through security of mobile code. In brief, security is concerned in keeping access to resources unavailable in general, through cryptography, restriction of access and other mechanisms, except for users that are recognized by the system as valid users. Workflow security introduces a shift from the traditional subject-object-rights focus of database to a transaction oriented one.
As more businesses engage in globalization, inter-organizational collaborative computing grows in importance. Since we cannot expect homogeneous computing environments participating organizations, heterogeneity and internet-based technology are prevalent in inter-organizational collaborative computing environments. Inter-Organizational workflow provides solution for data sharing and work coordination at global level. Threats lie in these essential connections among participating enterprises, which also enable profitable cooperation. A secure computing infrastructure (e.g., secure network, firewall) is needed to support their missions.
This work involves study of Inter-organizational workflow and the issues related to their correctness. Security features are then incorporated for each of the independent participating organizations as well as for the overall Inter- Organizational workflow. Security issues such as confidentiality, authentication, data integrity, availability and non repudiation are incorporated in Inter-Organizational Workflow with the help an example of an Online Computer Shopping System. In order to have secured communication between the organizations messages that are exchanged between the organizations are encrypted. Petri Nets are used for representation of Inter-Organizational Workflow. Petri Net Markup Language (PNML) is used for transforming Inter-Organizational Workflows to XML format. Workflow Petri Net Designer (WoPed) is used for modeling and verification of Inter-Organizational Workflows.
