For the last five years, we have offered our unique Freshman Summer Institute (FSI). The FSI is a week-long, residential program for new students that provides a bridge between high school and college.

Students brush up on subjects such as algebra, trigonometry and geometry by seeing how these are used to solve engineering and science problems. They participate in workshops to gain experience in

  • study skills,
  • teamwork,
  • leadership and
  • time management.

They engage in team problem-solving. They work with other new freshmen, faculty, and student teaching assistants on a week-long engineering project. At the end of the week they present the results of their project work to their colleagues and UMassD faculty at a poster session.

They will forge friendships with others in their freshman class and learn their way around the UMass Dartmouth campus.

Participants will have the opportunity to be tutored in mathematics in preparation for taking the Accuplacer Math placement examinations.

Participants are housed in new air-conditioned residence halls and will enjoy three meals each full day of the program in our spacious dining facility.

After dinner speakers from industry will share stories from the world of engineering.

Previous FSIs were unparalled successes and we expect this year's program to be even better.
