Justin McKennon, undergraduate engineering student in the Electrical
and Computer Engineering department has just published a research
paper with Prof. Khanna, titled "An exploration of CUDA and CBEA for a
gravitational wave source-modelling application". The paper is about
accelerating a gravitational physics numerical modelling application
using hardware accelerators, such as the PlayStation's Cell BE and
Tesla CUDA GPU. Their results suggest that one can obtain well over an
order-of-magnitude performance gain in scientific applications by
making use of these many-core architectures.
The paper has been accepted for publication in the Parallel and
Distributed Computing and Systems (PDCS 2009) conference, that will be
held in November at Cambridge, MA. This work was funded by the
National Science Foundation (grant numbers: PHY-0831631, PHY-0902026).
Justin was also supported by the Massachusetts Space Grant Consortium.
