Biography:

David A. Brown began his professional career in 1983 at the Naval Undersea Systems Center (NUSC) in the Range Development code and in 1985 took a position as a Research Engineer at the McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company in California where he made early contributions to the development of fiber optic interferometric acoustics sensors for towed and stationary arrays. He also headed the underwater acoustic test and calibration facility in Huntington Beach. His sensor designs were tested in some of the earliest fiber optic towed array prototypes for the US Navy. In 1987, He joined the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) as a staff GS engineer/scientist working for Professor Steven Garrett (a renowned Physical and Acoustical Scientist and the Acoustical Society of America Career Medal recipient winner in Engineering and Physical Acoustics). The Naval Postgraduate School is the US Navy’s primary institution for advanced degrees and is widely recognized for its programs in Acoustics and Defense Technologies. David quickly assumed teaching and thesis advising responsibilities after earning his MS at NPS in 1988 and then was appointed engineer-in-charge of the Fiber Optic Sensor Development Laboratory. He began teaching and graduate advising at NPS in 1989 and earned a doctorate in Engineering Acoustics at NPS in 1991 for his studies and work on the use of fiber optics interferometers with flextensional shells. He accepted a position as an Assistant Research Professor and assumed full principal investigator responsibilities of the Fiber Optic Sensor Research at NPS in 1991.

In 1993 he accepted a Visiting Professor appointment at Brown University with a concurrent visiting scientist/engineer appointment at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in New London. This was made possible by a research/contract grant from my sponsors at NAVSEA. In 1995 he accepted a faculty position at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and was appointed Full Professor in 2001. Professor Brown has been a primary force behind the development of the Department’s Marine Acoustic graduate option in the MS and Ph.D. degree programs as well as in teaching in off-site Marine Acoustic graduate programs at NUWC and Raytheon. He also holds positions as Adjunct Professor of Physics, Research Fellow at the Center/School for Marine Science, Director of the Acoustic Research Laboratory, and Principal of Acoustics and Optics at the new Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center. Professor Brown maintains an active research group involving graduate and undergraduate students and has attracted and managed research grant and contract external funding in excess of $2.5 million dollars.
