  ECE faculty member, Dr. David Rancour, was awarded a research grant by the U.S. Small Business Administration to study the use of microfludics for biosensors.

• College of Engineering Students Excel in IEEE Robotics Competition (11/17/2008)
  College of Engineering students, Matthew Donoughe and Kevin Cormier of Computer and Information Science (CIS) and Julian Plante and Nick Savery of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), participated in the 2008 IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Practical Robot Applications (TePRA) Robotic Competition, under the guidance of CIS faculty adviser, Dr.

  Dr. John Buck, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, won the Leo M. Sullivan Teacher of the Year award for 2008.
  
  
• ECE Department, ATMC and Progeny Systems Awarded $750k DoD STTR Grant (10/9/2008)
  The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) along with their partners the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center (ATMC) and Progeny Systems of Middletown, Rhode Island were awarded a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant for $750k by the Department of Defense.
  
  
• Dr. Yifei Li Awarded Prestigious DARPA Young Faculty Award (10/1/2008)
  Dr. Yifei Li, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), won the presigious 2008 Young Faculty Award of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
  
  
• ECE Faculty, Dr. Liudong Xing, Awarded Multi-Year NSF Grant (9/10/2008)
  Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Dr. Liudong Xing, was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) research grant for 250k to study the reliability of complex dynamic systems.
  
  
• ECE Faculty Awarded Patent for VLSI Chip Design (8/20/2008)
  ECE faculty members, Drs. Howard Michel and David Rancour were awarded a patent for the VLSI implementation of a complex valued neuron.
  
  
• ECE Faculty Awarded $550k DARPA Grant (4/16/2008)
  ECE faculty member, Dr. Yifei Li, was awarded a $550,000 research grant by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA).
  
  
• Howard Michel takes over as Director of Region I of the IEEE (3/11/2008)
  Dr. Howard E. Michel, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth takes over as Director of Region I of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for 2008 and 2009.
  
  
• ECE and IEEE Host Starcraft Tournament (3/3/2008)
  On February 29th, the student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) held the First Starcraft Tournament on campus.
  
  
• Dr. Liudong Xing Presented IEEE Outstanding Technical Innovation Award (9/10/2007)
  Dr. Liudong Xing, assistant professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was recognized by Region 1 of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), for her outstanding technical innovations in the field of Reliability Engineering.
  
  
• ECE Professors Awarded Research Grant by Office of Naval Research for Acoustics Research (4/25/2007)
  Drs. David Brown and Boris Aronov of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) were awarded a research grant by the Office of Naval Research to develop electro-mechanical modeling of piezoelectric cylindrical shells.
  
  
• Dr. John Buck Awarded Research Grant by Office of Naval Research (4/13/2007)
  Dr. John Buck, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was recently awarded a research grant totally $234,000 by the Office of Naval Research.
  
  
• ECE Ph.D. Student Wins Award in IEEE Graduate Student Technical Paper Contest (10/13/2006)
  Akhilesh Shrestha, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering came second in the IEEE Region 1 Graduate Student Technical Paper Contest.
  
  
• In Memory of Professor Emeritus Richard Walder (7/14/2006)
  Richard Walder, 83, died Thursday, July 6, 2006.  Rick was among the last of the pre-merger faculty.  He joined the Electrical Engineering Department at New Bedford Institute of Technology in 1956 and served continuously until his retirement in January of 1995.
  
  
• Karen Payton and Collaborators Awarded NIH Grant (5/24/2006)
  Dr. Karen Payton, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and several collaborators from MIT were awarded a $1.9 million grant by the National Institutes of Health
  
  
• Dr. Theophano Mitsa Honored by New York State (5/17/2006)
  Dr. Theophano Mitsa of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and her advisor Dean Kevin Parker from the University of Rochester were recognized by New York State's Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities in their list of 50 years of achievements by universities in New York state.
  
  
• UMass Dartmouth engineering design team wins competition (5/17/2006)
  A team of UMass Dartmouth Seniors from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, won the top overall award at the 6th Annual IEEE Student Design Competition in Rochester, NY on Saturday, the 13th of  May.
  
  
• UMass Dartmouth associate professor elected Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers Region 1 (11/18/2005)
  Dr. Howard E. Michel, Associate Professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has been elected Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Region 1 Director-elect for 2006 and 2007 and Director for 2008 and 2009.

• The UMass Dartmouth Solar DecathlonProject team members travelled to Lenoir City, TN, to work with Loudon County Habitat for Humanity in the construction of a net-zero energy building home. ECE students Manny Camara, Chris Makuch, John Dunn, and Professor Gerald Lemay, were among the 18 people from UMD who made the trip. In addition to helping with the construction of this structurally insulated panelled home, the team toured Oak Ridge National Laboratories and EPRI PEAC Corporation (a power systems engineering services company). An article describing this alternative spring break appeared in the Wednesday, March 17, 2004, issue of the Fall River Herald News on page A3.

• Dr. Dayalan Kasilingam attended the IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium in Toulouse, France between the 21st and 25th of July. He presented two papers and a poster. The two papers were:
  • Estimating Vegetation Bias in Polarimetric SAR Interferometry (co-authors: Madhukar Nomula and Shane Cloude).
  • The Dependence of Polarimetric Coherence on Surface Roughness for Very Rough Surfaces (co-authors: Saurabh Malhotra and Dale Schuler).
  The poster was titled: Speckle Filtering of SAR Images using Hölder Regularity Analysis of the Sparse Code (co-authors: Rama Kishan Malladi and Dr. Antonio H. Costa).
