Antonio H. Costa Biography and Publications

Dr. Antonio H. Costa was born in the Azores, Portugal and moved to the U.S. in 1977. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI, in 1994. He also obtained the M.S. degree in electrical engineering and the B.S. degree (summa cum laude) in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, and mathematics (quadruple major) from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (formerly Southeastern Massachusetts University) in 1985 and 1983, respectively.

Dr. Costa joined the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in September 1985, where he is now Chairperson and Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering. From 2005 to 2007 he was Dean of the College of Engineering and from 2002 to 2005 he was Chairperson of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

For the academic years of 1985-1986 and 1986-1987, he held a Full-Time Lecturer joint appointment in the Departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer & Information Science. Dr. Costa was appointed to Assistant Professor on September 1, 1989 and attained his tenure on September 1, 1991. He was promoted to Associate Professor on September 1, 1993 and to Professor on September 1, 1997.

Dr. Costa has served as Chairperson on several standing departmental committees, e.g., Electrical Engineering Curriculum Committee and Graduate Committee, and as Coordinator of the ABET accreditation for the Electrical Engineering program. He has also chaired the Sabbatical Leave Committee during the academic years of 1999-2000 and 2001-2002.

Dr. Costa's current research interests are in the areas of signal and image processing with emphasis on nonlinear and time-varying signal processing, time-frequency methods and wavelets.

Dr. Costa is a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He is also a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), Eta Kappa Nu, and Tau Alpha Pi. He was a Summer Faculty Fellow of the U.S. Navy - ASEE Summer Faculty Research Program in 1987 and in 1988. Moreover, he has been a consultant to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport, RI.
