After 37 years of distinguished service to the University, Dr. Hansberry retired in 2006 from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He passed away suddenly on December 30, 2007 at the age of 64.
Dr. Hansberry's professional interests included design and analysis of mechanical and electromechanical systems. His academic training was in applied mechanics along with courses in electrical engineering and physics. Much of Dr. Hansberry's industrial experience was in the area of valve and piping systems for nuclear and commercial electric generating plants. He had both professional and hobby interests in the many areas of manufacturing processes and was a skilled machinist and an adequate welder; in this regard he supervised and participated in the design of racing cars and agricultural vehicles. He also had considerable experience as an expert witness in cases of industrial accidents, premises liability and automobile accidents.
