Welcome
Greetings and welcome to the web site of the Department of Physics at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. I am Professor Marguerite Zarrillo, Chair of the department. The department offers excellent degree programs - Bachelor of Science in Physics and Master of Science in Physics. The freshman in our BS programs participate in the college-wide IMPULSE program, Integrated Mathematics, Physics and Engineering Laboratory, Science and Engineering. There are several tracks in which undergraduates can participate, including the astrophysical track, the environmental track, the high school teaching track and the academic track for those who want to go on to graduate school. Many of our students customize their programs by taking undergraduate independent research credits in a track of their own creation. Faculty advisors in the department help each student develop course and/or research plans that best fit the individual student's interests. Information about these programs and admission requirements and procedures are provided in the appropriate links within our web site. Information about our well-equipped facilities, including our telescope/observatory, our computational physics laboratory, our fluids laboratory, our electronic laboratory and our Transportation Laboratory for Intelligent Transportation Systems is also listed.
Our graduate programs serve the needs of students seeking to advance academic or industrial careers. The program offers carefully chosen core courses and wide range of electives. Students may elect to pursue one of three options: a course work option, a thesis option, or a project option. Besides being dedicated teachers, our faculty are also involved in cutting-edge research. Please visit their web sites to learn more about their backgrounds and research interests.
Undergraduate students as well as graduate students have the opportunity to assists in the classroom and laboratories as Teaching Assistants. We also encourage our undergraduates to get involved early on with our faculty research. We have small class sizes and exceptionally well-equipped laboratories. Look over our curriculum and research activities and, if you can, please visit our campus. We are here to help you. Feel free to call on any of us, if you need further assistance and/or information.
