College of Engineering Change of Major Standards

If you have been admitted to UMass Dartmouth, you may apply to change your major into an engineering program*. 

Listed below are the requirements for entry into each program. 

Bioengineering

  • Average GPA: 2.5 and better
  • Complete Calculus I and II with grades C and better
  • Complete Chemistry I and II with grades C and better
  • If the student performed well (B and better) in Calculus I and Chemistry I, the required "C and better" for Calculus II and Chemistry II can be waived.

Civil Engineering

  • Average GPA: 2.5 and better
  • Complete Calculus I and II with grades C and better
  • Complete Chemistry I and II with grades C and better
  • If the student performed well (B and better) in Calculus I and Chemistry I, the required "C and better" for Calculus II and Chemistry II can be waived.

Computer Science

  • Complete a course in computer programming (CIS 180 preferred) with a grade of C or better
  • Overall GPA of 2.3 or better

Computer Engineering

  • Satisfactory completion at UMass Dartmouth, with a GPA of 2.500 or higher of the following
  • Complete two courses from – ECE 160, ECE 256, ECE 201, ECE 260
  • Complete two courses from - Calculus I, II, III and Differential Equations 
  • Complete one course from - Physics I and II
  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher

Electrical Engineering

  • Satisfactory completion at UMass Dartmouth, with a GPA of 2.500 or higher of the following
  • Complete two courses from – ECE 160, ECE 201, ECE 260
  • Complete two courses from - Calculus I, II, III and Differential Equations 
  • Complete one course from - Physics I and II
  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher

Mechanical Engineering

  • Complete Calculus I, Calculus II and Physics I with a grade of B- or better. If taken outside at a community college B+ or better is required.
  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher

Physics

  • Complete Calculus I with a grade of C or better
  • Complete Physics I with a grade of C or better
  • Overall GPA of 2.0 or better

* These requirements do not apply to the Engineering undeclared students.
