October

Donna Alves and Juma Miller

Admissions Office

The EME recognition for the month of October goes to Donna Alves and Juma Miller in the Admissions Office. Donna and Juma are the front line for the University and, more often than not, the first people on campus prospective students and their families talk to. Last year Admissions received almost 25,000 calls and almost as many visitors. Donna and Juma single-handedly answer these calls and provide positive, patient, understanding, and helpful customer service to each call. They have a special knack for making visitors feel at the home from the moment they walk in the door, greeting each one with a welcoming smile. They work together as a team to welcome visitors, enter application materials, open and date stamping mail, and appointment scheduling for the Admissions counselors. They have a great relationship with the rest of the staff as well as student workers who refer to them as aunts. Both Donna and Juma agree the best part of their job is helping prospective students, easing their anxiety, providing information, and interacting with the student workers in the office.

Donna has been working in Admissions for 21 years. You would think after all this time she would know it all, but surprisingly she says, things still come through the door she’s never heard of. Between work and her 18 year old daughter, Donna hardly has any time to sit down…she’s always on the go! The one time she does get to relax is during her yearly vacation to Siesta Key, Florida. She also owns a 1954 Oldsmobile she and her daughter travel around in and show off at car shows.

Juma has officially been working for the University for two years although she started as a temp almost five years ago. Juma hit the ground running and once the position became available, she was hired on permanently. Juma has had a job doing just about anything you could imagine: from making gift baskets to selling hotel rooms. She has two children, an eleven year old daughter and a nine year old son. She loves to read and her favorite authors are Dean Koontz and Steven King. She moved from Roxbury to Fall River ten years ago in order to give her children better opportunities. It’s a decision she is thankful she made.

Donna and Juma both have fun at work and you see that just sitting with them for ten minutes. We are very fortunate to have such outgoing people welcoming our visitors to campus and giving them such a positive first impression of UMass Dartmouth. Thank you for each and every person you greet and the outstanding customer service you continue to provide!
