What do I need to take a online course?
You will need a computer or access to a computer that is connected to the internet. Your browser will need to support several common communications utilities: browser check
How much time do I have to complete an online course?
Online courses normally take the same time as courses on campus. Most are a full semester in length, but during intersessions and summer sessions, some courses can be completed in five or seven weeks. The content of the courses and the amount of learning, however, are the same.
Once you have registered for a course, you can contact your instructor with any questions.
Do I ever need to come to campus for an online course?
No, UMass Dartmouth online classes do not require you to attend classes on campus. However, we also offer blended courses that combine classroom and online instruction, which do require some classroom meetings. It is important to be sure of the format of the course when you register.
Who teaches the online courses?
Each online course is taught by a UMass Dartmouth instructor who is responsible for instruction, student assessment, and all student-to-teacher and student-to-student discussions.
Do online students receive the same course information/material as students who take courses on campus?
Yes, online courses cover the same material and maintain the same standards as courses on campus.
How do I register for online courses and programs?
To apply for admission to an online program or certificate, visit University Extension.
There are many ways to register for online courses. You can choose one of the following:

Using your UMass Dartmouth ID and password, you may log into COIN (Corsairs Online Information) which enables students to pay tuition and fees online by credit card.

What are the technical and computer requirements needed to take an online course?
Online learning does require a certain level of comfort using a computer. Please review our Technical and Computer Requirements.
How do I purchase my textbooks?
Textbooks can be purchased through the online bookstore.
Can I receive financial aid for online courses?
Yes, if you qualify for financial aid and follow the appropriate guidelines, financial aid is available for online courses. The office of Financial Aid is ready to work with you to help ensure success in your university financing plans. Contact us for financial aid information.
What kind of computer/ software will I need for an online course?
Computer software requirements vary from program to program depending on course content. Contact your program to inquire about requirements. UMass Dartmouth’s Computing and Information Technology Services (CITS) offers advice on computer purchasing.
Do the course sites have technical issues? Do they often go offline or down for maintenance?
myCourses is unavailable at times due to maintenance. Typically, these down times occur in the early morning hours when most students are not online. If other technical issues occur, an announcement is posted on the myCourses login page alerting you to the issue and how long it will take to resolve. Your instructors are alerted as well and make adjustments in the course due dates as needed.
What accommodations exist for learning disabled students?

How do professors and students correspond? Do online courses require meetings for chats or video chats?
At times, your courses may have live chats or even live classes using UMass Dartmouth’s live classroom technology. Typically, your instructor will announce these sessions in advance and will record them if you cannot attend.
How long does it usually take for instructors to respond to student emails and requests?
Each instructor posts course communication policies in his/ her syllabus information. Take time to review the course policies carefully.
I want to take online courses, but I don’t have an up to date personal computer. Are there discounts for UMass Dartmouth students?
