The Registrar's Office also conducts registration, arranges schedules, enforces certain academic regulations, and issues official transcripts from the university. Petitions to receive credit toward one's university degree for courses which have been taken elsewhere must be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar also certifies enrollment to the Social Security Administration, the Veterans Administration, insurance companies, banks, guaranteed student loan agencies, and other agencies including higher education loan agencies. Registration & Student Information Available by ComputerFaculty are strongly encouraged to become users of the Student Information System (SIS; SIS Plus) to assist in advising and registering students. Faculty may view student information and register their advisees on-line. Alternatively, students may complete an advisor card with the faculty advisor and go physically to the Student Enrollment Service Center to register. The following information is provided for your use during registration and is geared specifically to guide faculty in using SIS for this purpose. Invitations to RegisterAll students are sent Invitations to Register. Each invitation shows a student his/her date and time to register. SIS will only allow registration on or after the assigned time. If a student needs to know his date or time, please send the student to the Student Enrollment Service Center (SESC) located on the first floor of the Administration Building. Prerequisites and CorequisitesPrerequisites and Corequisites are being enforced in SIS Plus. Screen 104, the registration screen, will allow you to bypass prerequisites and class size limits. Faculty should only bypass restrictions on their own courses or with permission of the instructor of the course. Permission cards are also available for the student to obtain written permission of the instructor to bypass restrictions. On-Line Registration ProcedureTo use the on-line registration procedure of SIS, faculty advisors must (1) have an ALPHA username and password, (2) have an SIS user account and password (in addition to the ALPHA password), and (3) have attended a training session for the use of SIS. If you are in need of an SIS account and training, please contact Joyce Rosinha at x8528 or e-mail to jrosinha@umassd.edu.If you are interested in reviewing the features of SISPlus, please contact x8614. SIS PasswordsIf you have forgotten your SIS operator number or password or both, call Joyce Rosinha in CITS - Operations and Access (x8528). If your SIS password has expired, you will be asked to change your SIS password. Your new password must be at least 6 and not more than 8 characters. If someone attempts to log in to SIS three times and uses the wrong password, that person will be logged out of the ALPHA. This feature is to protect your account from unauthorized users. If 1 hour has passed since you last entered a keystroke, you will be automatically signed off SIS. This will protect your SIS account from unauthorized access. When you have finished registering, do not forget to logout of your ALPHA account. Please do not share any of your passwords. Quick Guide to SIS Screens
Registration may be blocked by "REG", the Registrar's Office, to enforce registration date and time; by "BUR", the Bursar, to enforce payment (R 32 P) or filing of health insurance forms (R 58 G). When you have finished registering, do not forget to logout of your ALPHA account. Please do not share your passwords. Research & Sponsored ProgramsOffice of Grants & ContractsToday, the university administers approximately nine and a half million dollars in externally funded projects, including research, educational support, and training projects. In the past five years, the level of funding received by the university has more than tripled. The increase in level of activity has resulted in many benefits to the university, including added support for graduate programs, expanded opportunities for faculty research, and greater selectivity in the projects the university seeks and thus an enhanced relationship between research activities and the goals and purposes of the institution. The Office of Grants and Contracts supports faculty in all aspects of the grants process. Faculty seeking external funding must have their application reviewed and approved before submission. The Internal Review and Transmittal form available from the Office of Grants and Contracts must be used. Grants and Contracts advises on the approval process. The Office of Grants and Contracts addresses an important element of the university's mission: to foster research, scholarship, creative productions, and other professional activities by faculty and staff. The program accomplishes this mission by providing three basic services:
Campus and UMass Research Grant OpportunitiesEach year calls for proposals are issued from a number of sources, with their own timelines and decision processes. Faculty should watch for e-mail broadcast announcements. Some research grants are made available through the Research Committee of the Faculty Senate. Research on Human SubjectsThe university has a comprehensive policy on the Protection of Human Subjects, as required by responsible, ethical practice and federal law. Both faculty and students whose research involves human subjects should become familiar with the university's policy and receive appropriate, required approvals from their department, college, or the university's Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects (IRB). Contact the Chairperson of the IRB, Dr. Barry Haimson, at x8381 or request information at the Office of Grants and Contracts. Policy on Conflicts of Interest & Policy on Faculty Consulting & Outside ActivitiesThe current AFT Contract contains sections detailing policy and procedure on these matters.
