Policies and Procedures

  • Hours Restrictions

Students may not be expected to work during class time.

The number of hours a student may work in a Federal Work Study position are limited by the size of their award.  No student may work more than 40 hours per week. Since the federal labor laws require that a student be paid time and a half for overtime, which University policy prohibits, UMD strictly adheres to this 40 hours per week policy.

Students are paid only for actual hours worked.  They will not be paid for holiday, sick time, snow days, meal time or travel time.

Pursuant to Department of Homeland Security regulations international students may not work more than 20 hours a week when school is in session.  There are no exceptions. An international student may work on campus full-time when school is not in session.

  • International students and stipend versus hourly wage

As stated above, international students are limited to working 20 hours per week on campus while school is in session.  This includes both those positions paid on an hourly basis and those paid with a stipend.  There should be no misperception that a stipend based position, because it is not based on an hourly wage, does not have hours attached to it. A stipend is payment for work performed.

Hiring Students

  • Training Checklist for New Student Employees

The success of a new staff member depends on how well they are trained.  With this in mind the following checklist is designed to help you better train your new student employees.  Please feel free to add, delete, or adjust this checklist to meet the needs of your department, office, or lab.
