Federal Work-Study and Non Work-Study Student Employment
Finding a Job and Getting Paid
-
-
Find a job.
-
If you would like to work for a specific department or person, contact them right away. Otherwise, contact the supervisor of each job you are interested in to set up an interview.
-
Get a student hiring form from the Student Employment Office once you find a job. (If you have more than one job, you will need a separate hiring form for each job.)
-
Have the supervisor complete the bottom portion of the hiring form. Make sure student and supervisor signatures are on the form or it will not be processed for payroll.
-
Bring the completed hiring form to the Student Employment Office and complete the rest of the required paperwork. (See Required Paperwork section.)
-
All forms must be handed in and processed together. You will not be paid until all forms are completed and turned in to the Student Employment Office. It is illegal to work before your hiring forms are submitted.
-
Finding a Job If you already have a job lined up, Great! Go to next step.
- There are two kinds of jobs on campus: 1) Federal Work Study (FWS) is available only to those with a FWS award as part of their Financial Aid. You earn this award; it does not come off your bill. 2) Non-work study is available to all students.
- You can find a complete listing of all student jobs on the Student Employment Office web page at www.umassd.edu/financialaid/studentemp/listings.
- Be sure to set your search criteria in the Job Type field to reflect the type of job you want and then click "search". For example, if you have not received a Federal Work Study award you only want to search the non-work study jobs.
- Federal Work Study students should feel free to investigate any off-campus, nonprofit organizations, but do keep in mind that all off-campus organizations MUST BE NONPROFIT to be eligible to participate in the Federal Work-Study Program.
- If you do find a job at an off-campus agency, please contact the Career Resource Center, Group 1, to verify the employer is eligible. The Career Resource Center determines off-campus eligibility for employers.
- There are many types of jobs available. Job categories include: office/clerical, tutoring, athletics, computer/programming, research/labs, accounting, arts, library, and security.
- You may have only one Federal Work Study job. However, you may have two jobs, either two non-work study jobs or one non-work study and one Federal Work Study job.
- If you need help with your job search come and see us in the Student Employment Office. We are here to help you.
When you find a job...
Remember Federal Work Study earnings are not applied to tuition. You will receive a bi-weekly paycheck based on your hours worked. Your total work study allotment is to be earned during the 2006-2007 academic year, beginning September 5, 2006 and ending May 18, 2007.
Keep track of how much money you earn. (Your cumulative earnings will show on your check stub.)
Your Paycheck
You submit your hours to your supervisor each week. Your supervisor submits your hours to the Payroll Office. Pay periods are every other Friday. Student checks are now mailed directly to your job site every other Friday. The Student Employment Office does not disperse checks.
"Direct deposit" is an option, not a requirement. Direct deposit forms are available at the Student Employment Office and the Payroll Office. If you choose this option a payroll voucher specifying the amount deposited will be issued to you.
All of your earnings for each pay period will be included in one check. If you have more than one job, please specify to the Payroll Office where you would like your check sent.
For students who have never worked at the University before:

-
Hiring form - with both student and supervisor signatures.
For students who have worked at the University before:
