Seminar I: Foundations in Social Justice

This session will explore theoretical issues related to different manifestations of social oppression in American society. In particular, this seminar will focus on the social constructions of race, gender and sexuality, and disability. And, their implications on social justice American.

Seminar II: Dynamics of Identity Development

Facilitator: Norman L. Barber, Director, Residential Education Programs and Assessment, Office of Housing & Residential Life
This session will explore the dynamics of identity development. It provides a theoretical framework for understanding multiple social identities, the interconnections among these identities, and varying privileges and disadvantages associated with different social group membership. Core concepts discussed include social power, privilege, dominance and subordination, prejudice, discrimination and liberation.

Seminar III: Social Identity and Leadership Development

This session focuses on the impact of the various social identities to which we subscribe, ,and their impact on our personal awareness, social relationships, and leadership development. This session will also include a discussion of leadership strengths and challenges (i.e., managing conflict, resistance, group-leader dynamics, etc.).

This seminar will explore the art of civil discourse and strategies to help you develop the skills, techniques, and confidence to express yourself, with style and grace. This seminar will also serve as a forum for discussing real and substantive issues with almost anyone, regardless of their social differences or cultural experiences.
