FYRE Programming
College. At no time in your life will you have this unique combination of circumstances: freedom to explore a wide range of interests; access to experts in a wide variety of fields; facilities for research, learning, and play; and… the time to make use of it. To help you get the most from your college experience, the Office of Residential Education has established a series of educational programs and resources. For example, Reading for Pleasure provides an opportunity for you to join others who are passionate about reading and discussing popular and inspirational books. This program may be of particular interest to those who love to read– just for pleasure.
In Front of the Class is a series of scholarly presentations by outstanding university faculty who have distinguished themselves in their chosen field of study. These presentations will allow you to better understand the person in front of the class–their research, their scholarship, and their love for teaching.
One of the most exciting things about college is having the chance to engage in out-of-classroom experiences, particularly those that allow you to gain a different perspective on the world. Field Trips to the New Bedford Whaling Museum are intended to do just that, while encouraging you to view museum exhibits, from a more mature and scholarly perspective.
Regardless of your chosen field of study, future employers will expect you to possess certain cultural competencies that will enable you to provide leadership in a diverse work environment. Thus, the Seminar in Social Justice Education offers a critical approach to diversity leadership in a global society.
Finally, the Department of African and African American Studies is pleased to announce the establishment of a writing and research assistance program. Intended for undergraduate students working on topics that deal with the black experience, faculty will advise students on topical suggestions, reference information, or methodological approaches to the systematic study of the racial, cultural, and ethnic experiences of people of African descent.
If you are interested in participating in any of these activities, please complete the registration form at the Office of Residential Education & Assessment, located in Chestnut Hall or email NBarber@umassd.edu.
