First Year Residential Experience

When Freshmen Arrive at UMD...

New programs help freshman navigate the challenges of their first year of college

They've looked forward to it for months, even years. It'll be great, exciting, new and different. It can also be baffling, daunting, and almost certainly not what they expected.

It is freshman year, and they are freshman students.

That first college year is amongst the most challenging times in anyone's life. In making it through - and most students do - freshmen tackle a range of problems and predicaments, in and out of the classroom.

To make the year more agreeable for more students, UMass Dartmouth has designed a series of initiatives, including a new pilot course to address common concerns, and a project that fosters innovative teaching approaches.

"There are all sorts of issues among freshmen relating to adjustment,” explains Dr. Norman Barber, who is directing the First Year Residential Experience Program. "We want to enhance the freshman experience so students are successful in dealing with those issues."
