The Origins of College Norms or "How did I get roped into this?"
By Craig RousseauIt all started with one man: Norman Barber, Director of New Student Programs at UMass Dartmouth. Looking for a way to address issues relevant to college students which would be both enlightening and entertaining, Norman stumbled upon the answer early one Sunday morning over coffee and bagels and the Boston Globe: a comic strip.
Now that he had the method, he needed someone who could help bring his ideas to life. Enter Jon Maxwell, former editor of the school newspaper and cartoonist. Having worked with Norm in the past, Jon quicky agreed and began drawing the exploits of Calvin, Rob and the gang in 1990. Although Job brought his own quirky sense of humor and college experience to the strip, College Norms never strayed from its original intent - to assist students in a djusting to the demands and responsibilities of college life.
As time went by, Jon felt the need to move on, and Norm was left looking for a new artist in the fall of 1992. At this point, then Torch editor Jamie Quinn was quick to suggest a suitable replacement: me.
After talking with Norm about the strip, I saw what he wanted to do and felt it was a really worthwhile thing to be a part of. I took Jon's characters and some new ones and we ran with'em. Every week Norm and I tried to talk about issues important to college students and still have fun with it. And so, two years later, we're still at it.
