First Year Residential Experience

The Origins of College Norms or "How did I get roped into this?"

By Craig Rousseau

It all started with one man: Norman Barber, Director of New Student Programs at UMass Dartmouth. Looking for a way to address issues relevant to college students which would be both enlightening and entertaining, Norman stumbled upon the answer early one Sunday morning over coffee and bagels and the Boston Globe: a comic strip.

Now that he had the method, he needed someone who could help bring his ideas to life. Enter Jon Maxwell, former editor of the school newspaper and cartoonist. Having worked with Norm in the past, Jon quicky agreed and began drawing the exploits of Calvin, Rob and the gang in 1990. Although Job brought his own quirky sense of humor and college experience to the strip, College Norms never strayed from its original intent - to assist students in a djusting to the demands and responsibilities of college life.

As time went by, Jon felt the need to move on, and Norm was left looking for a new artist in the fall of 1992. At this point, then Torch editor Jamie Quinn was quick to suggest a suitable replacement: me.

After talking with Norm about the strip, I saw what he wanted to do and felt it was a really worthwhile thing to be a part of. I took Jon's characters and some new ones and we ran with'em. Every week Norm and I tried to talk about issues important to college students and still have fun with it. And so, two years later, we're still at it.

More on us...

Jon
Jonathan Maxwell is a 1991 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (Visual Design Illustration). He was the original illustrator of the comic strip, and one of the creators of Captain Condom. Former Editor-in-Chief of the Torch (1989-1990), Jon is currently working as a freelance designer. Contrary to popular belief, he owns many pairs of jeans and Captain Condom is not his alter ego.

Jamie
James "Jamie" Quinn is a 1993 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (Visual Design Photography). Also a former Editor-in-Chief of the Torch (1991-1992), Jamie began working with Norm by agreeing to print the strip weekly in the paper. Some might ask "What does Jamie do for College Norms?" Good question... But we know that he has been involved with the year-book, the radio station, Campus Design, and the Orientation staff, so we guess he's just a good guy to have around. Jamie is, in fact, taller in real life.

Norm
Norman L. Barber, Director of New Student Programms at UMass Dartmouth, is a graduate of Lewis University, Romeoville, Illinois, and an all-around nice guy. Norm's goal in life is to grow nine more inches and to be a starter on the L.A. Lakers, (good luck Norm). Until then, however, Norm will have to continue his job here at UMass Dartmouth, running Orientation and other programs for new students. He also confides that he longs to move to that peachy state down south, Georgia.

Craig
Craig Rousseau is a 1993 graduate of University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (Visual Design Illustration). Craig is currently at work pursuing another degree (this time in painting) while the state picks up the tab (care of his Hall Directorship thingee). He's done a plethera of stuff on campus, including SAB, Campus Design Coordinator (1991-1993), yearbook, and Orientation. When and if Craig ever leaves this place, he hopes to get a job working for Walt Disney.
