Would you like to honor a colleague, friend or family member? Community members may choose an existing tree from the Centennial Way Flowering Pear allee, and University employees may choose one of the flowering cherries along the Cedar Dell Walk. Conversely, new trees also can be established in honor or memory of someone.
Honorary Trees and Gardens:
Ruben D. Goldstein Honorary Flowering Pear
- Located at the southeastern end of the Centennial Way Pear Tree Allee, this tree was dedicated to Ruben Goldstein on his 75th birthday by the Cope family.
Chancellor Jean MacCormack
- The first tree in the allee of Yoshino flowering cherries (Prunus x yedoensis 'Akebono') along Cedar Dell Walk was named in Honor of Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack. It was given by the Teacher Leadership Academy of Massachusetts in May, 2000 to honor the Chancellor's contributions to education and particularly to the Art Educator's Association.
- Planted in the Library's outer quad in the 1980's, the copper beech (Fagus sylvatica atropunicea cuprea) this stately tree pays tribute to the memory of Richard Fontera, Dean of Faculty from 1971 - 1982. Given to the University from friends of Dean Fontera. Inscribed on the stone is: "We may be marching to the beat of a different drummer, but let us be sure that we are deliberately out of step."
Ragsdale Memorial Grove - 1995
- Installed in 1995, this grove of 15 flowering crab apple trees, two English oaks and granite benches was a gift from family, friends and colleagues at the Standard Times in memory of James Ragsdale, editor of the Standard Times from 1976 - 1994. These 16 crab apple trees were dug and transplanted from Mr. Ragsdale's land near the University by students in Sears' Horticulture class in the spring of 1995. These were trees Jim Ragsdale had grown from seedlings. Now they provide spring blossoms during the first week of May and shade to nearby benches throughout summer. The two oaks were started from seed about 1990 by Jim Sears.
Ayuko Ito Memorial Tree - 97.03
- In the lawn behind CVPA building (Gp. VI), family and friends planted and dedicated this weeping, pink flowering Higan cherry (Prunus subhirtella 'Pendula') in 1977 in memory of Ayuko Ito. Ayuko was a former design student in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. This graceful tree blooms at the end of April-early May, and is underplanted with five June blooming azaleas (Azalea Satsuki 'Heiwa').
Milton Kramer Memorial Flowering Pear - 98.02
- A gift from the Kramer family in memory of J. Milton Kramer, Class of 1940. Located near the southeastern end of Centennial Way Pear Tree Allee outside of Group I.
Gerald Ventura, Jr. Kousa dogwood - 1970-99.4
-This Kousa dogwood (Cornus kousa) is planted in the inner quad near the library and was given by students of UMass Dartmouth in memory of one of their own.
New England Woodland Garden (Jesse B. Frizzell) - 98.06
- Naturalistic garden planted to reflect New England woodland vegetation was established in memory of Jesse Benjamin Frizzell, UMass Dartmouth student. As in New England woodlands, peak flowering time is in spring from April through May. The garden was planted by students in J. Sears' Horticulture class in the spring of 1998.
Herbert Howe Stevens Jr. Memorial Cherry Tree - 98.03
- The Herbert Howe Stevens memorial Yoshino cherry (Prunus xyedoensis 'Akebono') tree is a gift from Herbert's New York friends Kaneiji and Shirly Domoto.. Always mentally active and curious, Herbert attended many classes at the University during his senior years.
Dr. Mona El Bayadi Racine - 2000
- The second tree in the allee of Yoshino flowering cherries (Prunus x yedoensis 'Akebono') along Cedar Dell Walk was named in memory of Dr. Racine who was a much admired faculty member of Economics from 1979-1988.
Christian Helgeland - Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana glauca)
- A gift from Robert C. Helgeland and the Helgeland family in memory of Christian Helgeland. This June-flowering magnolia was planted in the spring of 2000 in the lawn adjacent to the East Entrance Garden.
John "Cuff" Cumiskey, Class of 2000 - July 10, 1976 - January 15, 1999.
- This blue Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca') was planted in memory of John by his family in the year 2000, the same year John would have graduated from the University.
Robert P. Palatroni bench and birchs.
- The memorial bench and planting of three white birches is found between Group I and parking lots 1 & 2 near the new Council Ring. It was established by family and friends of Robert Palatroni, "Psychologist, Mentor and Friend." Bench designed by CVPA faculty member Professor Janine Wong.
- Gift of the Franco-American Civic League of Fall River in 1996. Planted in lawn east of Group I adjacent to the pine grove. This cultivar is one of several that are reported to be resistant to the Dutch elm disease.
Liberty Elms - (Ulmus americana 'Liberty') - 1999
- Two Liberty elm trees given by John and Laurie Bullard were planted in the lawn next to the East Entranceway Garden in 1999.
Giant redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum) - 99.4
- A gift from Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ramsbottom in 1999, this giant redwood began its long (hopefully) life south of the library near the base of the amphitheater in 1999. This tree has the potential to live for several thousand years. Come back and see it in 20 years when it is several times its current size.
Colorado blue spruce (Picea pungens)
- The two blue spruces against the east stone wall along Old Westport Road at the entrance to campus were gifts in 1999 from Robert Oullette, Director of the University's Language Lab.
Yoshino cherry Tree allee - 2000
- The 31 mature Yoshino cherries (Prunus x yedoensis 'Akebono') wer a gift from Lloyd MacDonald and Michelle Taipole of South Dartmouth. These trees were transplanted from their residence where Lloyd had grown them from saplings. Trunks were a 4-5" caliper diameter and crowns had a 15-18' spread.
Cedar Dell Village flowering pears - 1999
- Over forty flowering pears and crab apples were a gift to the University from Lloyd MacDonald and Michelle Taipole. Placement and installation of these trees in Cedar Dell Village was made during the Landscape and Garden class of 1999.
Southern Magnolia from Sylvan Nurseries - 1998
- Sylvan nurseries has contributed to our campus landscaping efforts just by being close-by. They have also made several gifts of trees and contributions to our Landscape fund towards development of a campus Arboretum Walk. The gifts of several dogwoods and Magnolia grandiflora 'Bracken Brown Beauty' are growing near Admissions and Council Ring gardens
