Trees and shrubs put in by students and Grounds personnel in 1985
established a screen to the apartment buildings across from the campus
entrance. Horticulture classes have added to these planting over the years.
This planting is an example of the efforts by the UMD Landscape Committee
to make campus a more 'user friendly' environment. Another screen was
developed to the west of the Entrance gardens about 10 years later.
Recapturing the "Genius of place," students and faculty built stone walls
and transplanted native trees parallel to Old Westport Rd. With the backing
of the UMD Landscape Committee, student and faculty volunteers created a
boundary wall and partial vegetation screen at the front edge of campus by
building several stone walls and planting white pine, juniper and blueberry
dug from nearby old fields on campus. Grounds personnel and a contracted,
off-campus backhoe operator helped dig holes for trees and the trenches for
the walls. Students and faculty members built the walls and planted all the trees.
