General Education Requirement "C" - Cultural and Artistic Literacy

General Education Curriculum
As approved by the Faculty Senate through 10/22/97

Curriculum Standard

Students in all undergraduate degree programs are required to earn nine credits in the Arts and Humanities. At least an introductory exposure to some of the aesthetic, intellectual, and historical dimensions of human society is crucial to the full development of the individuals who will be called upon to contribute to that society. Arts and Humanities are defined as all courses in the Departments of History, Philosophy, Foreign Languages and Portuguese (including beginning and intermediate language courses); all courses in the College of Visual and Performing Arts; and literature and creative writing courses in the Department of English. Courses outside this list may well be suitable for inclusion and should be considered on a case-by-case basis. No more than six credits may be taken in any one Department. Additional Recommendation: The General Education Committee encourages faculty members to consider incorporating student attendance at cultural events into their courses, where appropriate, so that related learning can be facilitated within courses.

Objectives

1. Students will be exposed at an introductory level to some of the aesthetic, intellectual, and historical dimensions of human society.

2. Students will apply that exposure to their personal and intellectual development and as members of society.

Outcomes

1. In response to works of human expression and/or events of history, students will understand and be able to describe aesthetic, intellectual, and historical dimensions of human society that those works embody.

2. In response to works of human expression and/or events of history, students will be able to analyze and describe how the works and/or events relate to their own personal and intellectual development.
