Beginning in Fall 2012, new students at UMass Dartmouth will complete a new general education curriculum called University Studies. This program provides students with the opportunity to expand their skills and abilities while providing the breadth of study that is the hallmark of a liberal education.
The University Studies Program is an important way in which the University meets its Commitment to Student Learning.
Students will take approved courses to fulfill a number of requirements that are organized into Clusters:
1. Foundations for Engagement: Skills for the 21st Century
2. The Natural World: Scientific Inquiry and Understanding
3. The Cultural World: Aesthetic and Interpretive Understanding
4. The Social World: Humanity and Society
5. The Educated and Engaged Citizen: Integrating the UMD Experience

Beginning in Spring 2011, the Gen Ed Committee will start receiving requests from faculty for their courses to be approved for University Studies requirements. That process will be explained more fully here as the Gen Ed Committee finalizes the details.
Faculty and other members of the UMass Dartmouth community who are interested in learning more about the University Studies curriculum and how the course approval request process is going to work may wish to view this video, which was recorded at the March 8 Forum held in the Library Browsing Area. In it, the General Education Director, Doug Roscoe, goes over the details of the curriculum and provides an overview of the approval process for courses.
Any questions should be directed to Doug Roscoe.
