Academic Programs
UMass Dartmouth offers a certificate program and a minor in gerontology - the study of aging. Students can also develop a "virtual major" in gerontology through the use of the multidisciplinary studies major.
The multidisciplinary certificate program is designed for social science caregivers, health care professionals, and all who are interested in educational and career opportunities in the field of gerontology. The program is open to all students and people in the community, whether or not they are university degree candidates.
The minor is designed for degree candidates from any college in the university who want to specialize in the gerontological aspects of their discipline. The minor is also appropriate for students who want to understand more fully the aging process as it relates to the individual and society.
The programs of study all emphasize the development of positive attitudes about aging and the aged. Courses focus on analyzing the influence which society has on aging, and the impact of the older population on society.
The gerontology program is derived from courses offered in other departments in the university (such as political science, biology, education, art education, and philosophy) that deal with aging, as well as courses designed specifically for the program.
The program focuses on issues affecting the aged population including demography of aging, biology of aging, psychological concerns, public policy, ethics, financing health care, health promotion, and self-esteem.
