Elders at Risk

Who is an Elder at Risk?

Elders at Risk are older people who are unable to live safely in the community because they are unable or unwilling to provide for themselves one or more of the necessities essential to well-being such as food, clothing, shelter, personal care, or medical care.

The Elder at Risk is often without a nearby family member or support person. He or she may not have enough money, shelter, or medical care; may be depressed, confused, fearful; may be alcoholic; may be experiencing language barriers preventing them from accessing needed assistance; may be in danger of eviction or premature nursing home placement. They may be reluctant to accept help.

Without help, the Elder at Risk may not be able to safely remain at home.

To Find Help

If you have concerns about an elder in your community who may be at risk, there are several agencies you can contact for help. These agencies specialize in helping elders at risk by coordinating community resources and reducing barriers to care so that they can remain well and living safely in their own homes with dignity. Those services may include:

  • Homemaking, home-delivered meals, companions and personal care attendants.
  • Medical, mental health, legal and money management referrals.
  • Assistance with applications for housing, medical insurance and other benefits.
  • Transportation services.
