FACILITIES GUIDE TO COST ESTIMATES FOR RENOVATIONS OF RESEARCH & LABORATORY SPACE

Below is a guide for gathering the necessary information needed by Facilities to establish a workable quote on renovations and/or improvements to existing research and laboratory space. Prior to putting a proposal together the following steps need to be followed.

  • Identify the specific rooms to be worked on. If the space does not belong to you, you will need to consult with the owner of the space or the University Space Planning and Allocation Committee (#8242, Wayne LeBlanc, Chair) to identify a viable alternative.
  • Call Facilities (#8100, 8101 or 8102) to request a copy of the drawings for the identified space.
  • Mark on the drawings where the equipment is to be placed, renovations are to be done and any other work needed in that particular space. You do not need to mark items to scale, facilities will do that for you.
  • Get an Equipment Cut. An Equipment Cut is information on the piece of equipment you are requesting which shows in detail the instrument to scale, the services it needs (water, steam, drainage, etc.) and other specific information for properly installing the instrument. Such information is provided by the manufacturer or the standard catalogs provided by facilities.
  • Provide the following specific information:
    • Name of Contact Person and their telephone number for the specific space to be renovated. If there are several spaces provide contact names and numbers for all spaces that will be affected.
    • Your deadline for receiving a quote from Facilities.
    • Your timeline for actually installing and completing the work and/or timeline restrictions of the funding source or granting agency. (i.e. If NSF requires that the work be completed in 2 years, give the time frame of the proposed project and limitations for completing the project).
  • Send the complete package of the above information to Facilities.
  • Facilities will work up a quote and working drawings for you. Be sure to provide times and the means to reach you to insure a final workable quote.
