The Claire T. Carney Library Archives and Special Collections has an exciting opportunity for a talented and enthusiastic archives and special collections librarian with background in Portuguese Studies to develop an archives focused on the experience of the Portuguese in America. Working with the University Archives and Special Collections Librarian and the new Faculty Director of the Portuguese Archives from the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture, the Archivist of the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese American Archives will be primarily responsible for developing, organizing, maintaining and publicizing a growing collection of unique materials documenting the Portuguese American experience.  S/he will be part of the University Library Archives and Special Collections team and will participate in planning, collection development, reference, cataloguing, outreach, grant writing, fundraising, oral history projects, digitization, and other activities that support the mission of the archives. Working closely with colleagues in municipal archives in the Azores, Portugal, and Brazil and other institutions in the United States, the archivist will initiate and implement projects to share digital resources. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is situated at the heart of a region with a century old pattern of immigration from various parts of the Portuguese-speaking world.  With a broad base of community support, the archivist will work closely with donors and sponsors to develop collections.  S/he will work with the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture and the Graduate program in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies to develop research opportunities, exhibits, and programs in support of the academic program.  The Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese American Archives and the University Archives will move to a fully renovated, climate-controlled storage and research facility in the main library in 2008. 

The position requires the ability to read, understand, and communicate the content of documents written in the Portuguese language; knowledge of the history, culture, and literatures of Portuguese-speaking peoples; and knowledge of issues in archives management, cataloguing, digital projects management, collection development, and community documentation.  It requires an M.L.S. with a concentration in archives management from an ALA-accredited institution or the equivalent; professional experience in archival arrangement and description, cataloguing methods, and knowledge of a broad range of issues in archives management.   Preferred qualifications include a second degree in a related field, formal coursework in Portuguese Studies or Portuguese language, proficiency in speaking and writing Portuguese, grant-writing experience, and knowledge of issues involved in the successful management of digital projects.
