Assistant Dean for Library Administrative Services


The Claire T. Carney Library is recruiting for an Assistant Dean for Library Administrative Services.  The Library is a campus service that is rapidly growing and evolving along with its parent institution, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.  The University is near the end of a capital campaign to raise funds for renovation and an addition to the Library.  This will include a Learning Commons and space for The Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese American Archives, University Archives, and Special Collections. 

The Assistant Dean will work with the Dean of Library Services to plan, direct, and assess the services and resources of the UMass Dartmouth Library within the context of the university’s mission and strategic plan.  S/he will manage, plan for, and coordinate activities concerning the utilization, safety, security, and maintenance of the library building.  S/he will develop and implement library procedures, collect and analyze library data, and help to oversee the library’s renovation project.  The Assistant Dean will help with the preparation of grant proposals and with fundraising activities.  With the Library Dean, s/he is the library liaison to the community.  As a member of the Library Administrative Council, the Assistant Dean will collaborate in determining policies and work closely with the library’s committees and teams. S/he will work with the Dean and division heads to ensure that all library personnel are working effectively and are in proper position classifications. S/he will work with the Dean to provide vision and leadership for the library so that services and collaborations continually evolve and maximize emerging information technologies.

The Assistant Dean will work with the Dean to administer the operation of the university library in a collegial and collaborative atmosphere that fosters teamwork and cooperation.  S/he will work with campus constituents, particularly Computing and Information Technology Services, for the purpose of enhancing services to students, faculty, and the community.  S/he will coordinate assessment of library services; assist with developing and implementing annual and strategic planning and initiatives; and help to prepare and manage the library budget.  The Assistant Dean will represent and advocate for UMass Dartmouth at local, state, regional and national library organizations and consortia; serve on university and library committees; and participate in local, state, regional and national conferences, workshops and seminars for professional development.

The position reports to the Dean of Library Services and is a non-unit position.

Minimum qualifications include an MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution.  The position requires excellent leadership and managerial skills to help plan, articulate, and implement services; a solid record of achievement in academic libraries including progressively responsible experience; experience coordinating library projects; experience with personnel management in a unionized environment; a strong commitment to library excellence, a respectful work environment, participatory management, and teamwork; an understanding of current and emerging technologies as they apply to libraries; at least five years successful experience as a supervisor or manager; excellent planning, budgeting, and organizational skills; experience with library space planning; and a strong commitment to customer service.  The Assistant Dean must have the ability to interact effectively with diverse cultural and ethnic groups; excellent verbal and written communication skills; knowledge of university-level management and governance systems; knowledge of academic library trends; a strong commitment to excellent customer relations and user-centered library services; the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with faculty, students, staff and community users; and knowledge about budget management and allocation.
