Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Noon - Sustainability Workshop: Social Entrepreneurship – Claire T. Carney Library, Room 314

Come learn why you may want to consider being ‘socially green’ when starting a business. This course is taught by a National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship-certified Public Policy graduate student.

3 p.m. - Innovation at UMD: An Exhibit – Library Living Room/Claire T. Carney Library

This exhibit will showcase the work of students and faculty from all segments of the university in a variety of formats. Wander through a selection of scientific posters, marvel at the ingenuity of engineering design projects, watch our Endeavor scholars speak about their own leadership projects, hear a 3-minute thesis presentation or have a seat and watch some digital media creations from CVPA.  Observe the impact we are having with our scholarly endeavors and meet some of the students and faculty behind the scholarship.

10 a.m. - Embracing the Concrete: Transforming the Claire T. Carney Library and Beyond: Library architects and CVPA students discuss Paul Rudolph's work– Grand Reading Room /Claire T. Carney Library

Moderator Dr. Anna Dempsey, Professor from the College of Visual & Performing Arts, will help reveal the philosophy and formation of the innovative library addition with designLAB architects Robert Miklos and Ben Youtz, Austin Architects Jonathan Austin and Jennifer McGrory, from the original Rudolph team Gratton Gill; and Assistant Dean of the Library Catherine Fortier-Barnes.  A symposium, led by four CVPA students, will focus on the utilization and future of Brutalism architecture and the UMass Dartmouth campus. Watch the event.

Noon - Law School and Lawyering in Today’s Economy – Grand Reading Room /Claire T. Carney Library

From the UMass Law School, a student, faculty member and alumnae discuss current issues including affordability, access, hiring and academic issues.  Trustee Mardee Xifaras serves as moderator to delve into these critical topics with UMass Law student Brenna Ferrick, Amunae S. Carolina Africano, Esq., JD '92 and Stephanie Perini-Hegarty, Esq., JD '96, and esteemed faculty member Richard Peltz-Steele. Watch the event.

2 p.m. - An Afternoon with Congressman Barney Frank – Library Living Room/Claire T. Carney Library

The recently retired congressman, who is known for his smarts and wit, announces the Barney Frank Archive Project, which will provide UMass Dartmouth and the community an opportunity to showcase his life in public service.  Watch the event.

3 p.m. - Discussion with Congressman Frank - Library Living Room/ Claire T. Carney Library

Congressman Frank will discuss the future and structure of our financial system given the fiscal cliff debates going on throughout the United States.  Moderated by UMass Dartmouth Student Trustee Joshua Encarnacion. Watch the event.

4 p.m. – Lessons Learned from Successful UMass Dartmouth Alumnae   - Grand Reading Room//Claire T. Carney Library

UMass Dartmouth showcases four successful and dynamic alumnae who describe their life pathways and the impact of education on their accomplishments. With moderator Dr. Juli Parker, alumnae panelists will include Jan Baptist '88 – College of Arts & Sciences, Sailynn Doyle '00 – College of Arts & Sciences, Amanda Martinez '95 – College of Arts & Sciences, and Elaine Varelas '79 – College of Arts & Sciences. 9 a.m. - Measuring the City: an Introduction to the Urban Initiative's SouthCoast Urban Indicators Project - Grand Reading Room/Claire T. Carney Library

Colleen Dawicki, MPP '12, Project Manager of the UMass Dartmouth Urban Initiative, will give an introduction to the development of this innovative website (www.southcoastindicators.org) and the ways in which it can be used to shape decision-making and drive change in the region's cities. She will be joined by MPP candidates and Urban Initiative graduate assistants Robert Golder and Jason Hill, who will discuss the role of students in developing the site and its content.

11 a.m. – Healthcare in America - Grand Reading Room/Claire T. Carney Library

Learn from UMass Dartmouth alumni in the field of healthcare as they reveal what are currently the challenges and opportunities in the world of healthcare and their own experiences starting out at UMass Dartmouth. Jim Rattray, VP of Marketing and Public Affairs, South Coast Health System will serve as moderator with alumni panelists comprised of Susan Annicelli '78 – College of Nursing, Esther Emard '75 – College of Nursing, Stephen Pires '83 – College of Nursing, and Joan Vitello '78 – College of Nursing. These UMass Dartmouth alumni disclose their distinctive secrets to success and how they manage innovative enterprises.  Moderating the group is Dr. Michael Goodman, Associate Professor & Chair of the department of Public Policy at UMass Dartmouth with alumni panelists Karen Dendy-Smith ’85 – College of Visual & Performing Arts, James French ’78 – Charlton College of Business, Sanford Russell ’82 – Charlton College of Business, and Robert Tavares ’85 – College of Engineering. 3 p.m. - Past President & Chancellor Panel - Grand Reading Room/Claire T. Carney Library

Dr. John Brazil, Dr. Peter Cressy and Dr. Jean MacCormack discuss education, UMass Dartmouth and the pathways that brought them to leadership positions in SouthCoast Massachusetts.  Robert Karam '67, HD '91 will serve as moderator for this panel. Watch the event.

5 p.m. - Chancellor’s Colloquium - Woodland Commons

The Chancellor’s Colloquium will feature Professor Laura Franz of the Design Department and Professor Mark Santow of the History Department.  Professor Franz will be presenting "Web Typography: Where Tradition Meets Technology" and Professor Santow will be discussing ‘Ghosts’:  Vietnam, Afghanistan, and the Lessons of History.

A Celebration of Transformation:  The Inauguration of Chancellor Divina Grossman

1 p.m. Main Auditorium opens for seating

2 p.m. -Inauguration in the Main Auditorium (Overflow viewing in Campus Center)

Chancellor Divina Grossman will be officially installed as the leader of UMass Dartmouth in a ceremony that honors academic traditions and celebrates the power of education to transform lives. University of Massachusetts President Robert Caret and Board of Trustees Chairman Henry Thomas will be joined by students, faculty, staff, and more than 50 delegates from other academic institutions.

3:30 p.m. - Inauguration reception in Campus Center

4:30 p.m. - Multi-Cultural Concert (Main Auditorium)

Students and faculty will showcase their talents.

Transforming Communities and Lives

9 a.m. - Students & Educational Importance

Two hundred fourth graders will be bussed to campus from Fall River for a conversation with Chancellor Grossman and Fall River Mayor William Flanagan about the impact of education on their lives.

1 p.m. - Mural Painting

Dartmouth high school students will accompany the Chancellor and UMass Dartmouth faculty and students in creating a mural at the school.
