Let the law take its course in case of Shankaracharya
Issue Date : January 1, 2005

By Bal Ram Singh

To the editor: I am greatly disappointed to read the opinion column written by Mr. Bal Ram Singh ["Irony found in jailing of Indian holy leader," Dec. 15]. He outrightly accuses the Muslim president, Sikh prime minister and a Christian political leader for the mess that the "Great Shankaracharya" has created for himself. Mr. Bal Ram Singh is absolutely sure, sitting thousands of miles away, that the Shankaracharya is innocent. I would have expected the learned professor to support the law of land and let the law take its course. If the Shankaracharya is innocent, he is entitled to his day in court. We should refrain from making this a religious issue. Time has come to treat the religious, as well as political, leaders as common human beings and not as reincarnations of God. The common people of India deserve a system that delivers equal justice for one and all, and that includes Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Christian. Professor Jang B. Singh Worcester, Mass
