Topic: Novel approach to postpone aging and to prevent atherosclerosis by using polyherbal formulation : Ayurvedic view

Abstract:

Ayurvedic system of medicine is a time tested traditionalmedicine used in India for health management. In the US it is covered under complimentary and alternative medicine. Ayurveda is not only the use of herbal medicine but it also includes life style and diet. Therefore in order to achieve the full benefit of this system, especially for the management of chronic diseases, one should use it in totality, not in fragments.

The basic concepts of ayurveda, covers the theory of tridosh, concept of agni and concept of ama. The health and the pathogenesis of any disease is based on the imbalance of these three systems. Accordingly the medicine in ayurveda is also classified based on these concepts.

Based on the aforesaid concept, a polyherbal formulation has been developed to prevent atherosclerosis (Patented formulation). BHUx has shown positive results on several parameters, such as HDL increase, less endothelial thickening, less calcification in the smooth muscle cells (both in cell culture and in animal model), inhibition of MCSF in cell culture, specific inhibition of Cyclooxygenase-2 and lipoxygenase-15 and less lipid deposition in the aorta of EKO mice. Now BHUx is in the process of clinical studies in India.

Dr Yamini Bhusan Tripathi, Ph.D, Biochemistry is head Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, varanasi-221005, India. His area of research is herbal drug development for chronic diseases, based on the ayurvedic concepts. He also contributes in validating the basic concepts of ayurvedic system of medicine in possible scientific terms. He has 2 patents for polyherbal formulations for atherosclerosis prevention and protection against radiation hazards. At present he is visiting US under Indo-US program between NIH and Ministry of Health, Govt. of India. In this visit of 3 months, he visited 7 US labs and interacted with US scientists to explore the possibilities of exploring the ayurvedic botanicals on different scientific parameters, using molecular biology tools.
