Abstract:

Every major religion bestows a special status to some sacred, pilgrimage sites.India being the land of many religions, it abounds in pilgrimage sites. This slide show will embrace an eclectic mix of pilgrimage sites associated with four major religions of India: Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism. The importance of each site, its brief history and some of its salient characteristics will be discussed. Some sites that are revered by more than one faith will also be covered.

Sukalyan Sengupta is an Associate Professor in the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at UMD and is also associated with the Center for Indic Studies.
