Time: 7 P.M.

The Center for Indic Studies (CIS) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMD) is pleased to announce an Indian Classical Music Concert on May 1 (Saturday), by the famed exponents of Dhrupad, the Gundecha Brothers.

Description

Dhrupad is regarded as the quintessence of North Indian Classical (also known as Hindustani Classical) music. A form of devotional music that traces its roots to the Sam Veda (several millennia old), dhrupad has led to or influenced nearly all later forms and styles. In this tradition, the vocalist embarks on a voyage of capturing the most perfect pitch of every note in an austere and deeply contemplative mode.

The Gundecha Brothers (Umakant and Ramakant) are one of India's leading exponents of the dhrupad style of music and have performed at many prestigious international music festivals and institutions in India, Europe, North America, Australia, Singapore, and the Middle East. The Washington Post remarked, "At their most venturesome, the brothers' voices seemed more supple and versatile than any string instrument.

"These two brothers are a miracle -no one who can make it should miss this event", exhorted Professor Madhu Jhaveri of UMass Dartmouth. He said, "I never thought that we could be this lucky to have them here on our campus".
