FAQ Answers

Why should I give to a public university?
Give because you have benefited from your UMass Dartmouth experience and you want future students to have the same opportunity - small classes, great faculty, and meaningful conversations both inside and outside the classroom. Give because gifts from alumni and friends ensure that important services like the library, the Health Center, the William Q. MacLean Campus Center, and the language and computer labs are available to current and future students.

How can I make a gift in memory or someone or to honor someone?
Many people choose to make a gift to UMass Dartmouth in memory or in honor of a family member, classmate, faculty member or friend. These gifts may be designated toward a specific UMass Dartmouth program or fund, or their use may be left to the discretion of the University. When making such a gift, be sure to indicate the name of the person being remembered.

I would like to give UMass Dartmouth a boat, piece of lab equipment, car, etc. How would I do this?
We sometimes receive requests to accept gifts in the form of objects of value or scientific interest. Before we can accept such an in-kind contribution, however, we must find a home for that item at UMass Dartmouth. To determine whether and how UMass Dartmouth might make use of an item you are considering donating, please contact the Advancement Office at 508-999-8200.

What are "planned gifts" and why are they so popular?
Planned gifts include trusts, gift annuities, and bequests. When you contribute to a trust or gift annuity, you and/or your beneficiaries will receive payments for life or for a pre-specified term of years. This is an attractive option for donors who are looking for ways to provide an annual income to someone over the age of 55, while still making a substantial gift to UMass Dartmouth. Bequests allow donors to help UMass Dartmouth in the long term, while still retaining assets during their lifetimes. All types of planned gifts provide considerable tax advantages. For further information on planned gifts, please call 508-999-8200.

What are the tax advantages of planned gifts and bequests?
One advantage can be an income tax deduction in the year of the gift. Also, if you contribute marketable securities, you might significantly reduce your capital gains tax. In addition, planned gifts allow a donor to reduce the value of his or her taxable estate.
