Application Procedures for F-1 Program Extension
1. At least 30 days before your I-20 completion date, notify the International Student Center staff that you are applying for program extension.
2. Request an email notification, memorandum, or letter from your academic adviser. In this written notification, your advisor should
a. certify that you have been continuously enrolled for a full course of study
b. certify that you are making sufficient academic progress towards the degree
c. recommend an extension of your study program
d. provide a new date when you are expected to complete your studies.
3.After this information is received from your academic advisor, your SEVIS record will be updated with the program extension request. You will receive a new I-20 with the revised completion-of-studies date. You may be asked to obtain updated financial support documents before the revised I-20 can be prepared.
4. You must keep this new I-20 and all previous I-20 forms you have been issued. You may be asked to show them to
a. an immigration officer when you travel outside the United States or apply for any future immigration benefits
b. your international student advisor when you apply for approval for any actions concerning your status.
