Costs

Each study abroad program is slightly different.  UMass has several types of opportunities for students.

The cost varies depending on where you want to go, how you want to get there and how long you want to study for.    There are various scholarship and financial aid opportunities.  There is also an intangible line item: the value of this experience for ones resume and personal development.

Exchanges-  These are agreements with other international universities or governments that usually account for UMass students paying UMass tuition while studying at another institution.  Airfaire, local transportation, food and spending money is not included.

Faculty-Led Programs- UMass Dartmouth is also fortunate enough to have some of its faculty members run summer programs.  These are established to give the students an international experience in the shorter term while also earning credit towards graduation.  Each trip varies in cost from $3000.00-$6000.00 (including airfare) and gives up to 6 credits.

Program Providers- Currently UMass Dartmouth uses some agencies who have set up study abroad opportunites for students.  Most students have been able to find a program through one of these companies that fits their goals, desires, and academic demands.  The student "withdraws on exchange" from the University and pays the agency tuition and fees. With all costs including airfare and spending money, these programs run between $10,000.00-$20,000.00.

Internships- There are also various internship opportunities.  Some are run through outside agencies with similar costs to the program provider study abroad programs, others are run similar to exchanges, while still others are run by the University's Career Services Center.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

There are a host of scholarship and financial aid opportunities.

FINANCIAL AID

UMass Dartmouth Financial Aid- The Financial Aid office will use the Financial Aid Plan we fill out in the International Exchange and Study Program office to evaluate your need for the upcoming term abroad.

It is important to speak with the Financial Aid office to see what assistance you qualify for with the new estimate on your study abroad Financial Plan Form.  Federal financial aid you receive -- Pell Grants, some grants, Perkins, PLUS and Direct loans, etc. -- can be applied to the cost of study abroad. If you are not currently receiving federal aid, you may wish to consider applying for it to help cover your overseas expenses.  In some instances your costs for a semester may come out to be higher than a semester at UMass so, if you are not currently receiving federal financial aid, you may want to.  If you are interested in applying, visit Federal Student Aid FAFSA.  Please allow several weeks for processing.

Once you receive your Financial Aid Award Letter you must contact the Bursars Office and alert them on how you want your funds disbursed from the University to pay for the international program.  Funds can not be released until 10 days before the start of the UMass Dartmouth semester corresponding with your study abroad program.

Also, please let the International Exchange and Study Programs Office know so that we can make sure the program costs will be covered and you will be all set for your departure.
