Payment

For programs requiring a deposit, please telephone the UMass Dartmouth Enrollment Center with a credit card number and then note "paid" in the online program application:

Once acceptance to a UMass Dartmouth or UMass in Lisbon program has been confirmed, payment is due in full.  (For third-party provider programs, refer to that organization's policies.)

Plan to pay the UMass Dartmouth Enrollment Center by November 1 for Winter and Spring programs, or by April 1 for Summer and Fall programs.

All payments can be made by check, money order, MasterCard, Visa, or Discover, and either by mail or in person (at the University Enrollment Center located on the first floor of the Administration building).  Credit card payments may be made by telephoning 1.508.999.9129 from 9:30-6:30 Monday – Thursday or 9:30-3:30 on Fridays.  For other payment options, please contact the Enrollment Center.

Cancellation

The UMass Dartmouth study abroad course cancellation policy is as follows:

$350 program deposit – always non-refundable (unless student is not accepted or program does not run)

60 days prior to program start = 0 refund

61-90 days prior to program start  = 25% refund

91-120 days prior to program start = 50% refund

More than 120 days = fully refundable minus the $350 deposit

Air Ticket Purchase

Generally, student air tickets are arranged and purchased by the student (for faculty-leds, ask the professor if the group is travelling together).  Students may purchase anywhere, online or through a travel agency.  If you choose to work with a travel agency, STA specializes in student travel and offers some payment plans.  For more information, telephone STA Travel at 1-800-216-7520 and ask about the "Book Now Pay Later " program.

Study Abroad Cost Considerations
The cost of studying abroad varies depending on where you want to go, how you want to get there and how long you want to study for. Most kinds of financial aid can be used toward study abroad instead of campus study. Each study abroad student is billed the standard $250 study abroad fee and maintains enrolled status for the term of participation in a study abroad.

The total expense depends on how you budget for personal expenses while abroad. Study abroad programs vary; carefully read the description to see what is included. Consider the educational and personal growth benefits that may enhance your chances of obtaining the job you want when you graduate.

Faculty-led Programs - paid to UMass Dartmouth
UMass Dartmouth offers faculty-led courses abroad between semesters and as part of some semester courses. Costs vary depending on the number of credits, number of participants, inclusions and costs in the host country. Payment for UMass Dartmouth Faculty-led programs shuld be made to the Enrollment Center and is applied to your university student account.

Exchange Programs - tuition and fees paid to UMass Dartmouth
These are agreements with other international universities that bring international students to UMass Dartmouth and open up an equal number of places for UMass Dartmouth students to study at that university. With Exchange programs, the UMD semester tuition and fees are billed to the student as usual and paid at home; food, housing, transportation and other personal expenses are usually paid in the host country.

The Hessen Exchange includes all UMass campuses and 10 universities in Germany.  These programs have ddep additional discounts for all US citizens and green card holders based on scholarships offered by the government of Hessen, Germany.

Third-party Program Providers - usually paid to the provider organization
UMass Dartmouth has agreements with reputable organizations that offer programs all over the world and enable students. Costs vary significantly based on destination country and length of study. Payment to third-party providers can be made directly or you can choose to apply the cost to your university student account and have the Bursar's Office pay the provider. 

Financial Aid
Students on financial aid packages, can apply much if not all of their aid to study abroad programs.  Once accepted to a specific study abroad program, the financial aid recipient student is required to complete the Study Abroad Estimated Expense Form.  This form and documentation of the estimated expenses is first submitted to IPO for verification, and then submitted to the Financial Aid Office.  Then watch your COIN account for changes and/or adjustments to your Financial Aid record.  While additional money is not awarded for study abroad, students frequently qualify for a higher cap on the amount they can borrow at very low student loan interest rates.

Once you receive your financial aid award letter you must contact the Bursars Office and alert them as to how you want your funds disbursed from the University to pay for the international program. Funds will not be released until 10 days after the start of the UMass Dartmouth semester corresponding with the semester you are abroad.

Scholarships
There are two scholarships awarded by the university that all students are eligible to apply for with the UMass Dartmouth Foundation Office in the Foster Administration Building.

Some departments have additional limited scholarship funds for study abroad, especially for programs led by faculty. Discuss your plans with your academic department.

In instances where other resources are not available, it is sometimes possible for a student to receive a no-interest loans of $750 from the UMass Dartmouth Foundation.  Talk with that office about your situation. 

Many third-party providers offer small scholarships and some offer significant scholarship funding for specific programs and fields of study.  Check the provider website and telephone them for specifiics. 

The United States federal government offers a number of scholarships primarily for students studying in countries where the US would like to develop greater familiarity and expertise (typically not western Europe or Australia).  Particularly for students with well-developed and concrete study abroad goals, these are realistic and substantial funding options.  Such scholarships include the Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship (for Pell Grant recipients only), Boren Awards for International Study, the Freeman Awards for Study in Asia, and Fulbright awards.  The scholarships are highly competitive and students should begin early to prepare a thorough and well-edited submission.  Contact the IPO early for dates of information sessions and further information.
