Once Accepted

Course Credit from Abroad

Students participating in any non-UMass Dartmouth program need to complete a Study Abroad Pre-Approval Course Plan Form. Students should prepare for their meeting with their advisor by printing the course descriptions and any other relevant information (syllabi, number of contact hours, etc.) and ranking which courses they would like to take abroad. Academic advisors will be able to assess the quality of the course, whether UMassD credit may be granted, and whether the course will be applicable for graduation requirements. Once the course equivalencies have been established, students must obtain the signature of Education Abroad Liaisons (only CVPA students), and secure the signature of the Chairperson of their major or College Dean. The form must then be dropped off to the IPO (LARTS 016) for final approval.

While abroad, if the student's schedule changes they should be in touch with their academic department to secure approval and a course equivalency. Emails with such approvals should be forwarded to intl_programs@umassd.edu.

If a student takes any courses abroad that are not listed exactly as on the Study Abroad Course Plan Form they will need to complete a Retroactive Course Approval Form that requires the signatures of their Department and College. By not having courses pre-approved, students run the risk of not receiving credit for their coursework abroad.

Air Ticket Purchase

Generally, student air tickets are arranged and purchased by the student (for faculty-leds, ask the professor if the group is travelling together).  Students may purchase anywhere, online or through a travel agency.  If you choose to work with a travel agency, STA specializes in student travel and offers some payment plans.  For more information, telephone STA Travel at 1-800-216-7520 and ask about the "Book Now Pay Later " program.

Study Abroad Orientation

All students participating in a study abroad program are expected to participate in a mandatory study abroad orientation presented by the International Programs Office near the end of each semester. Watch the IPO website ("Annoucements") for dates. The latest Pre-Departure Orientation Powerpoint‌ may be downloaded here.  View it on Firefox or Internet Explorer, in Slide Show mode and click on the live links.
