Photographics Department leaping into the digital era!!

Brief Description of Project:
The department began the transition from film to digital photography in 2000. Digital is an improvement because chemicals are not required, results are instantly viewable and can be manipulated easily. These funds accelerated full transition.

Impact on Campus:
Delivery of photo services is more reliable, almost instantaneous, and digital format gives customer more flexibility in using product.

Project Coordinator:
M. Pereira (mpereira@umassd.edu)

Outstanding Issues:

  • Nikon Cool Pix 995, these are the two cameras for students and/or faculty to borrow. We need more time to implement this project because of outstanding issues such as the making of a "borrowing policy," which computer stations will be used for students to download their images, etc.

Assessment and evaluation activities:

  • A decrease in the number of slides processed from last year is already a result of changing from film to digital photography.
  • Now, and because of the equipment acquired, we will be able to expand our services to better support the students and faculty. Also, we will be able, in most cases, to finish jobs on the same day they were received.
  • Some assignments can be handled by customer (especially off campus assignments) using on loan cameras thus freeing up the staff to perform other tasks and/or assignments.
  • With these equipment, and as long the number of incoming jobs stays almost the same, the department staff will have more time to spend in being more creative.
  • Another advantage in changing to digital is the fact that we do not have to mix chemicals as often as we did before, thus being environmentally friendlier.
