UMass Law is dedicated to assisting all students with their individual learning styles. By providing additional instruction, guidance, and encouragement as students confront the rigors of the study of law, the Academic Resources department helps fulfill the law school's primary mission of educating men and women for membership in the legal profession.
ARWC Services
The ARWC complements the curriculum's traditional focus on the development of analytical skills in the law by focusing on improving students' abilities to analyze and to think critically. In addition, by providing students with personalized instruction and by recognizing the different learning styles of students, the ARWC positively contributes to the law school's commitment to treat each person as an individual.
By offering instruction that acknowledges and accommodates different learning styles, the ARWC provides a positive example that UMass Law welcomes the varied educational backgrounds and experiences of all its students. The program consists of the following components:
The One-L Program
The director and lecturers on a variety of study and legal analysis skills topics necessary for law school success
The Dean's Fellow Program
A peer-tutor program provided by upper-level students selected by the dean who provide individual and group assistance in the ARWC six days a week
Academic Counseling and Tutoring
Provided by the director for individuals and study groups
Writing Center Workshops
Mini-reviews of grammar mechanics, legal citation, and research skills offered by ARWC staff
Exam Preparation Workshops
Offered in the fall and spring semesters by the director to enhance students’ legal analyses and exam taking skills
Writing Center Support
Peer tutors review Legal Skills assignments with students and assist with organization, citation, and grammar mechanics
Special Services and Exam Accommodations
Reasonable academic and testing accommodations are provided for documented students with special needs
MPRE and Bar Exam Guidance
Prior exams, outlines, and multi-state testing booklets are available for student use
Lending Library
The ARWC provides a variety of hornbooks, exam preparation materials, and study aides for students’ at-home use
Study Center
The ARWC is a comfortable study room for individuals and study groups with black and white boards, computer stations, lending library resources, and the ever-present candy jar
