Re-established by two first-year law students in 2011, the Mock Trial Team strives to build UMass Law's reputation for excellence in trial practice among the top law schools in the United States.
Mock Trial is a national competition team. Members prepare a civil or criminal case to present before judges and lawyers. Each team prepares both a plaintiff/prosecution and a defense case for each competition. By preparing for these competitions, the organization hopes to improve members’ public speaking, team work, and trial skills.
Teams consist of four members: two lawyers and two witnesses. Depending on the tournament, each team competes against other law schools and is judged on:
- creative use of the law
- knowledge of the case
- presentation of the facts
Success in these competitions will not only earn national recognition for UMass Law, but also scholastic funding for the team.
