The Fall River Herald News JAY PATEAKOS , Herald News Staff Reporter Date: July 21, 2004 DARTMOUTH -- Due to an overwhelming response by future leaders and their employers, the Leadership Southcoast Program has extended the application deadline until today at 5 p.m. for any interested potential community leaders. Thirty local business leaders, in conjunction with the Corporate Programs and Partnerships at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the Fall River and New Bedford Chambers of Commerce, have launched the Leadership SouthCoast Program, designed to help strengthen individuals in the community interested in serving on committees and boards of the future. Leadership SouthCoast is a new nonprofit organization with a mission to organize and design a leadership development program to advance continuous improvement in the area. The leadership program will encourage emerging leaders from the area to join together and broaden their understanding of the impact of their decisions on the area and its future. Selected leaders take part in a 10-month community leadership program consisting of a two-day retreat, which will be held on Sept. 9 and 10, and nine monthly full weekday sessions continuing until June 2005, which will include a series of structured small group team building experiences. "The reason for the deadline is we have had numerous employers that have people in their establishment that they feel would make great community leaders," said Tony Vieira, executive director of UMass Corporate Programs and Partnerships. "Due to vacations and the sponsoring process, some of these businesses needed more time for the application process." A copy of the application can be found at leadershipsouthcoast.org. The completed application can be faxed to 508-999-8621. There is a $35 non-refundable fee for each application. Tuition for the program is $3,000 and covers all cost of materials, including meals and all expenses associated with the retreat. Employers or sponsors are asked to cover $2,700 of the proposed costs, in demonstrating to their employee their personal commitment to the program.
