UMass Dartmouth postpones Community Appreciation Day from September 23 to October 20

Due to the tragic events last week, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack has postponed Community Appreciation Day until Saturday, October 20. The event, which was scheduled for Sunday, September 23, will coincide with the annual Homecoming Weekend.

Community Appreciation Day will begin at 4 p.m. in the campus quadrangle, and will culminate with a dazzling fireworks display at 7 p.m. The fireworks were themselves postponed from July 1, when a downpour forced the annual Independence Day Pops Concert indoors.

Music, face painting, moonwalks, a rock climbing wall, a Velcro wall and various vendors will be part of the Community Appreciation Day festivities. Blues Alley Swing Band Thang, a local band, will perform. Bring a picnic, blanket or folding chairs. Food will be available for purchase. Fleet Bank, the Town of Dartmouth, and the UMass Dartmouth Foundation are sponsors.

Community Appreciation Day was planned as one of several events celebrating the investiture of UMass Dartmouth’s third chancellor. Chancellor MacCormack will be formally invested on September 28. This event is not postponed.

UMD’s annual Homecoming Weekend, October 19-21, welcomes graduates back to campus, but most events are open to everyone. Highlights include a special Eisteddfod Folk Festival concert from 4-7 p.m. Friday, a parade and bonfire from 5-8 p.m. Friday, the UMass Theatre Company’s production of To Kill a Mockingbird Friday through Sunday, and athletic events all weekend.
