UMass Dartmouth to present “Madeiran Heritage” quilts to Madeiran Museum, Carney Academy in New Bedford at reception December 12 at university 

UMass Dartmouth students enrolled in “Art, Artists, Aging and Enjoyment” stitched together a cross-cultural, cross-generational experience last year when they created a heritage quilt with local Madeiran women and a class of 5th grade students at New Bedford’s Carney Academy. 

On Thursday, December 12, the university will celebrate the quilt makers and their quilts at a reception from 6-7 p.m. in the art gallery of the Visual and Performing Arts building. The public is invited. Parking is in lot 8. 

Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack and Prof. Dante Vena, Art Education, will formally present the Medeiran Heritage quilt to Gabriel A. Coutinho, President, Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento, Inc., on behalf of the Madeiran Museum in New Bedford. A similar quilt sewn for practice will be presented to Carney Academy and 5th grade teacher Janice Fernald.
