UMass Dartmouth observatory open house is May 6

The next open house at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Observatory is scheduled on Monday, May 6, beginning at 8:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Participants will have the opportunity to view the fine planetary lineup of Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter, which are all clearly visible in the western sky after sunset. Venus, Mars, and Saturn form a little triangle in the sky; Mars is the faintest and Venus is the brightest. Enthusiasts will have the opportunity to look through a recently donated Meade LX-200 8-inch computer-controlled portable telescope, the little sibling of the Observatory’s 16-inch scope.

Parking is available in lot 17 or on Ring Road.

The Observatory is also planning a summer fundraising auction. To donate items, contact Professor Alan Hirshfeld at (508) 999-8715. Proceeds from the auction will be used to purchase a new dome for the Observatory.
